This is about Windows Vista with HW2
This could also help Twilight out and his big issue with Hw2 not working on Vista
In HW2 alot of people say that HW2 doesen't work on HW2 and alot of people have Vista and it works for Hw2 and I talked to somebody about this he said theres a solution buy Linux thats what he said but I don't know thats true.
I'm going to get Vista soon for Halo 2 because Halo 2 needs Vista to work and I still want to play HW2.
I'll find out if my HW2 does work on my Vista.
Twilight what version of Vista do you have? Ultimate, Premium or Basic? because if you have Ultimate that means HW2 can't take the speed of the Ultimate Vista upgrade and doesen't want to work on on it.
I don't know about the Premium working on it and Basic probaly works on it.
I'm getting Vista Basic because I don't need that much out of Vista.

Hey guys,
I've got good news. I solved the problem about Windows Vista not working with HW2.
Well I went a website to find intructions for people that have Vista to follow them and then a game that doesen't work will work on Vista like HW2.
Here is the brief summery of what your about to do:
http://www.mydigital...-windows-vista/
This is the instructions on how to do this use the first method:
http://www.mydigital...-windows-vista/
In no time you'll be playing HW2 on Vista
Also after you do all of this:
1. right click on the HW2 shortcut and press properties
2. go to compatibility
3. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for"
4. Put the mode on "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
This should let you play HW2 on Vista now with no problems
By the way I have Vista right now and Windows Vista Home Basic is the best one for gaming.

LOL! Compatability mode, even I could have told you that. (Hey computers are my life of course I could have)
The only difference between Vista Packages/Versions is the features that it comes with... nothing else.
And your friend is having you on max, Linux wont solve anything... The only things it will leave you are completely confused and unable to play MOST games... ie 90% of all games will not work under an *Unix environment.

LOL
Max, it was very thoughtful of you to try and help me with my Vista problem. Thank you.
While I have Vista Ultimate it's not that HW2 "can't take the speed" of Ultimate. There is absolutely no difference between the kernels of Ultimate and Basic - Vista basic is Vista Ultimate, it just has features like the Aero UI deliberately disabled.
Of course, putting it into XP compatibility mode was the very first thing I did. That of course did nothing. I also disabled UAC.
Trust me, I have run the gambit on possible solutions to my problem. The game loads and works perfectly fine when I use the recompiled HW2.exe provided for me by SecuRom. The issue is that the official HW2 patch to Version 1.1 fails, meaning I can't join any v1.1 games online (e.g. all of them).
As HW2 is a very old game, the patch will likely not be patched, as it were.
I think that the issue ultimately lies in the emulation firmware (e.g. securom protection). If I REALLY ended up missing HW2 I could probably find a workaround in using another emulator like a Daemontools or something, but I'd probably end up having to use cracks, etc. which then might run into CD key issues.
Interestingly, people have apparently been successful in patching to HW2 1.1 with Vista and joining games. This leads me to believe that my issue is ultimately solvable, though I'm not sure I care enough to warrant the effort. I have an old thread at RelicNews, though people there have run out of ideas, too.

The simple truth is that OpenGL games are going the way of the DoDo. Vista is reflective of that. Yes, my problem is probably solvable with some sort of jury rigged workaround, but I just don't care enough.
Thanks for the thoughts though! HW2 is an aging game that was tons of fun to play for several years. I sure have gotten my money's worth out of it! I'm content with leaving HW2 now....I really enjoyed playing with all of you and I'll definitely hope to see you all in another game like Sins very soon!

By the way if you don't have a Video Card you might want to get one instead of a Chipset because the Video Card will change alot so that HW2 can run on Vista (graphics) because before it would just crash on you if you loaded a game (but you could enter HW2 and the lobby but not load a game) and I had a chipset so then having a Video Card will make a big difference and so that Vista can handle the graphics.

guys , guys ... theres 1 thing you are forgetting about widows vista , Its a bussiness operating system .. its not designed for gaming. It does not have all the programing language xp does.. its built and designed for corporation use. That why microsoft did not stop making windows XP. My advice , switch back to windows xp for gaming.

If this is true, I agree. Uprising (from 1997) even works on XP.
They most likely still have XP OS installation disks going round so if you get one of those you should be able to play Homeworld 2 again.
